Former #1 Pick on the Mound for the Royals Tonight

Posted by: photogwingsfan on June 26, 2009.

When Luke Hochevar (2-3, 6.61) steps on the mound for the Kansas City Royals (30-39) tonight against Roy Oswalt (3-4, 4.48) and the Houston Astros (32-36) will again get the chance to see if drafting him with the number one pick in the 2006 amateur draft was worth it.

Yes he was drafted at the same time Dayton Moore was named the general manager but this regieme should still be held accountable. Hochevar is entering only his second full season but it is still a very important season. Someone that was picked with the first overall pick and wasn’t coming straight out of high school should be able to be an effective pitcher by this time and so far I really haven’t seen it except for his masterful performance on June 12 against the impatient Cincinnati Reds.

Someone with his draft status has to before more than a  serviceable pitcher. I am willing to wait until after this year but for me each start is meaningful.

Royals Win In Dramatic Fashion

Luke Hochevar pitched a solid 7 innings, giving up two runs over seven innings, and the Royals win in extra innings. Soria had a one run lead heading into the bottom of the 10th, blew the save, then gets the win after a solo homerun from Olivo in the top of the 11th. We also got to see the John Bale that was good, which was a welcome site.

Brayan Pena bounced back from an awful appearance in his last start, to have a solid defensive outing and also hit the game-tying home run in the 10th.

I’ll have a post soon about what was going on between Pudge and Pena, as they had a bit of a scuffle in the 10th.

Hey, we won a series.

Glad to be here

This is my first post on RoyalsPrimacy and hopefully not my last.

I have been a lifelong Kansas City Royals fan and have lived in the Kansas City metro area all my life except for college and a stint in central Kansas.

I look forward to sharing my opinion and hearing about everyone’s as well.

Do You Wish We Didn't Trade Beltran?

Posted by: Casey on June 23, 2009.

Well, today marks the 5 year anniversary of when we traded Beltran to Houston for Teahen, Buck and Wood. Wood is no longer with the organization, and Teahen and Buck have had a lot of playing time over the last 5 years. Two of the three prospects worked out for us, at least they have made contributions and have started a lot of games. That’s not a bad trade, right?

I’ve always wished we didn’t trade Beltran. Every farmer in the mid-west can tell you that the Royals trade their stars. It’s no secret. Beltran, Dye, Damon. The list goes on and on. I remember thinking that I didn’t think the Royals would deal Beltran, who was still fairly young, and obviously had a lot more to contribute. I’m happy for Beltran, that he was able to get out of KC and have some excitement, because I don’t know what would have happened to this organization if we didn’t trade him. Honestly, it couldn’t have been much worse, could it? Beltran was a solid all-around defender, wonderful athlete, terrific bat for power and contact. He was everything the Royals needed him to be. What happened to the concept of building a team around a star, instead of building it around youth and mixing in some sub-par vets. The latter obviously didn’t work out, at least in my opinion.

Now I can’t really blame anyone within the organization for this aside from the Glass family. They were afraid he’d become too expensive to keep, I get it. But it seems like now he’s okay with spending some money as long as he’s making money in return, which he is. Attendance so far this year is certainly up from previous years, and if he spends some more money on the team, than obviously attendance will continue to rise.

Anyways, back on point. I wish that we wouldn’t have traded Beltran. I don’t think the trade benefited the Royals, I think it hurt us. I don’t see us being as bad as we were in some of those seasons, I think I see us being better. Hindsight is 20/20, but even if management knew this was going to be the result in five years, I think they would have still made the trade.

Dismal Royals Head To Houston

Posted by: Casey on June 23, 2009.

Showing or causing gloom or depression. I think that’s a fairly accurate word for the way this team makes me feel. There are times when we show good potential, then there are times where we completely fall apart. This weekend series against the Cardinals was a nightmare, which was proceeded by the collapse in the final two games against the D-Backs. And all of this after a 4 game winning streak.

Want to know something else that is depressing? Greinke is winless in his last 4 starts. He gets another chance starting on tuesday as he leads the Royals into Houston. Many of the Astros players have not seen Zack, aside from Ivan Rodriguez who’s got a .370 average and a homerun in 27 at bats.

When I look at this Astros team, I think they would have been really good about five years ago. Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee, Pudge, Darin Erstad, Keppinger. They’ve got some vets who have been very good, but they are 32-35, in next to last place in the NLC. They are behind the awful Reds, who we just saw last week (and swept). This will be an interesting series, especially with the short porch in left field. I think the key will, yet again, be the Royals defense. I think we’ll get good enough pitching to win in atleast 2 of the 3 games, so the key will be scoring enough runs and not having another defensive breakdown. Please take Callaspo out in the 7th if we have a slim lead..

Royals Lose 5th Straight, Continue Trend

Posted by: Casey on June 21, 2009.

Guillen Shows Off The Hustle

Guillen Shows Off The Hustle

Royals go 5-20, win 4 straight, lose 5 straight. That’s been how the last month+ has gone for the Royals. I think inconsistency is going to happen with a team that struggles as much on defense as this team does. However, we can’t continue playing the “we’re a young team” card any longer. This team isn’t a young team. There are some spots that are young, but it’s mostly veterans. We can’t continue to make excuses for how poorly this organization has performed.

I had been okay with Dayton Moore’s work for the most part up until this offseason. I wasn’t happy with acquiring Coco and Jacobs. This team was suppose to be built around pitching and defense, and we didn’t help our pitching staff this offseason. We certainly didn’t help our team defense, either. I’ve also been amazed at the lack of speed that this team has.

Hopefully we can start to play some better baseball, and more consistent baseball. Keep your heads up Royals fans, there will come a day when all of this pain and agony will turn into joy, I hope.
