Interesting Names on the 40 Man

Posted by: Casey on January 29, 2010.

Jarrod Dyson

He's like Gathright, only not as good of a hitter...

Jarrod Dyson – Dyson is a 5′10 160 pound burner who was drafted in the 50th round of the 2006 draft by the Royals. Since then, he has performed consistently in the minors. In 801 AB’s, he’s hitting .270 with an obp of .343. He also has 107 steals in 131 tries. He literally has no power, and very little gap power, only hitting 22 doubles and 11 triples. What you’re looking at is a defensive outfielder who can cover some ground, and who has decent bat control at the plate and can cause some problems in the running game. He also bats left and throws right, as most burners do.

Hey he's a defensive upgrade at catcher, let's release someone better than him

Manuel Pina – Pina came over to the Royals from the Rangers in that eerie minor league swap last season which brought him and Tim Smith here for Danny Gutierrez. He’s an excellent defensive catcher, and while only being 22 years old, he is our 3-deep catcher. He was a all-star in the Texas league last season.

I've seen this before, only he swings left-handed, and his first name is Alex

Jordan Parraz – Acquired in winter of 2008, Parraz made a splash in the Royals farm system last season, making three different stops and ending up at Omaha at the end of the season. The 24 year old right fielder has a cannon of an arm, and is also a good baserunner. In 81 games last season, he hit .348/.432/.541. He was also limited to injuries. This is a guy I see in our big league outfield provided he can show the organization he can be healthy.

Parraz could make this years club with a good showing in spring training. The other guys have no chance.

Our outfield is pretty crowded already, so unless we move a guy or two I doubt Parraz makes it right off the bat.

And we carried three catchers lots of the time last year, so I wouldn’t be surprised in Pina is around off and on.

If Dyson is like Gathright but not as good as a hitter…I hope he never sees the field for the big league club

I didn’t actually check, but I’m fairly certain Gathright has around 2k at bats in his minor league career and hits .320+. He never turned that into big-league production though.
