Trade Soria, Others Not Needed
Posted by: Casey on July 21, 2009.
As much as it hurts to see players traded away that we grow accustomed to, it’s time to realize that this team isn’t going anywhere. We need to move towards the 2010 and on season’s and sell the pieces of this ship that aren’t going to be apart of the future. I think the need to go list includes:
- DeJesus – It was fun, but he’s not the future
- Teahen – Love the guy, but we could get something of value for him
- Guillen – I’d trade him for anything above a new pitching machine
- Buck – Sorry ol chap
- Soria – What good is a team with a great closer when we only need him 30 games a year and we aren’t contending? We could get some serious value for him, not to mention if we don’t think he can pitch 5 outs in an outing, than we’re babying him, and if he needs to be baby’d then we should trade him.
- Meche – I’m tired of his injury-prone-self. He’s a workhorse, but if he’s giving up runs then he’s supposively hurt. According to Meche’s lack of responsiblity, if he was always healthy, his ERA would be around 2.00 .. I’m tired of it.
- Anyone else that we don’t feel is going to be apart of the future of this team.
Let’s face it, we’re still two years away from getting impact bats like Mouse and Hosmer, let alone the young pitching. Our AAA is terrible, so it’s going to be two years at least. We shouldn’t be spending more money on guys that are not helping this team.
Our payroll this year went up around 12 mil if I’m not mistaken, and this team is worse than it was before. Dayton Moore had a terrible year. Coco deal = fail. Jacobs deal = fail. Farnsworth = fail. Ponson = fail. Anyone else? I know I’m forgetting others, just writing a quick piece.

Out of those guys we would get the most from Soria but there is no way you can trade him. If you think we should trade Soria then why not Butler, Gordon, etc…Soria is a stud and you have to hang on to some of them…yeah he would get a lot but that is doesn't make it right…I don't think they are babying Soria…I just don't think Hillman knows WTF he is doing. And as we know hindsight is 20/20…but I don't think the Coco deal is totally a fail because with being injured you can't get a full look at him…yeah he was struggling but I liked his defense better than having Guillen out there. Overall yeah the deals Moore made didn't pan out so again next off season will be important but even more after the bad choices that were made

agreed. it sucks trading away good talent though because there are teams like tampa who shocked everyone so it seems like we could eventually do the same. But most likely not with our luck. But just imagine if we would've held onto Dye, Damon, and Beltran. Or even if we held onto endy chavez or raul ibanez. I just wish we would actually hold on to talent instead of trading it away all the time. I mean look what we always get? Mike Wood, John Buck, Angel Berroa!!!! We can't evaluate talent because not only do we have horrible on the field talent, but we have terrible off the field talent. Our coaches suck, our AAA and AA and A ball staff suck, and our scouts suck. We're gonna be like the Montreal Expos pretty soon and move out of kc. I'm for it because i'm sick of being disappointed.

They have been babying Soria. Being a closer doesn’t mean the 9th inning. It means pitching when the game is on the line in the 7th or 8th. He has more mopup appearances than appearances in a 1-run or tied game. Plus you trade him and not Gordon or Butler because Soria has arm problems. That’s why they baby him. Soria isn’t as young, either. And like he said, this team doesn’t need a lights out closer.. We can’t get to the 9th often enough.

I don't want to trade Soria, he's a good player, and we have him under contract for a long time. But if you look at what we could get for a guy like Soria, when we don't really need him for the next couple years anyway, I think you've got to send him on his way. The reason why you don't trade Butler/Gordon is because both of them are young and are everyday players. You're also not going to get very much for either of them. Butler is still a downgrade at 1B/DH for almost every team at this point. Gordon certainly is.

We aren't the Rays because we don't have the young studs the Rays have. They stock up on starters/relievers, mix in some power with Pena, have a perennial all-star in Crawford, and have the amazing young guys like Longoria and Upton. Zobrist, Longoria, Upton, Aybar, Isringhausen and Matt Joyce all make under 1 million per year.
Instead, we have an okay rotation, terrible bullpen, mix in power with Guillen and Jacobs (who combine for fewer HR than Pena has by himself), we don't have a perennial all-star, and our young guys don't pan out.

well we aren't the rays cuz we trade away our good talent. it's not like we've never had any

True, but what young players have we had in the last 3 years that rival that type of talent?
